Hello!
Let me introduce myself first. My name is Astari, and I’m striving to
be a polyglot.
I was born on June 11, 1986 in Jakarta, that’s why I’m now 30 going on
31 pretty soon, and I am a Gemini. They said the Geminis are all about
communication, including languages. I love to talk. I’m a talker. I love to
communicate, especially with foreign languages I’m recently learning.
I’m gonna let
you know some more important and not-so-important things about me first.
I’m pretty lucky to be born in a very beautiful, loving family. My
parents love me and have raised me well. I have the best father, mother, and
siblings in the world. My father was a pilot, my mother was a stewardess before she had me. My sister, three years younger than me, is a dentist, and my brother, four years younger than me, is a pilot. I'm a family person. I love to spend time with my family and our dog.
I love books a lot. I just love being at the library or the book store.
Being surrounded by books makes me happy. I don’t read a lot tho’. I love
reading, but I’m a slow reader. So I have lots of books in my bookcase, waiting
to be read. My favorite authors are Mario Puzo, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, and
George RR Martin. Yeah I know that sounds so cliché. I told you, I don’t read
that much. I love books in different way.
I love music. My favorite band ever is Led Zeppelin, but Freddie Mercury is still the best vocalist and performer ever. I enjoy any kinda music tho', not only classic rock.
I love learning about things like history, philosophy, mathematics,
astronomy, physical science, sociology, anthropology, simply anything. I’m some
kind of a jack of all trades. I love many things but master nothing, and that’s
fine with me. Well, I wish to master at least three subjects: languages, fine
art, and creative writing. And I’m gonna start with the languages first.
I can’t really explain my obsession with languages, but I’ve been
wanting to learn languages since very young. And now that the internet has
given us all the facilities we need, I could learn languages easily.
There are so many languages apps you can use in your computer or
smartphone. I used to use Live Mocha, and then some other apps and programs
before finally I found Duolingo. I love it so much! They have so many choices
of languages!
Where am I now?
I’m a native Indonesian speaker. English has been my second language,
but I’m not perfect. I’m still confused with some grammar stuff,
and, the more languages I learn, the more English vocabularies I start to forget.
I speak Italian. I’d say it’s my third languages. I can write, speak,
and read articles in Italian, and hold some daily conversations. But I’m still
far from good, especially in listening. I also speak Spanish and Portuguese,
but worse than my Italian.
So, when I met random people from Italian, Spanish, or
Portuguese-speaking countries, I can introduce myself to them, getting to know
their basic information, telling them that I speak their languages a little,
how much I adore their countries, and I can sing some of their national anthems
too. And I can tell them simple things in simple conversations. But, to have
some heavier conversations… like explaining political things, or other serious
things, not yet. Well, maybe a little, in Italian.
Anyway, now I’m learning French, Dutch, German, and Greek too. Greedy?
Yeah I know. And I know that my learning system is no longer effective. I need
to get back to my old way of learning: repetition!
I easily learned Italian by repeating to read the same sentences over and
over again over the year. I had this book, ‘Learning Italian in a Week’, and
I’ve been learning the sentences in that book by repeating them every day, then
every week. And I got plenty of vocabularies from that book.
So, I’m gonna start making the basic notes first, in a blog, to help me
remind everything, because sharing is learning, right? And I’m gonna start
making some sentences to repeat everyday.
Let’s learn together guys!
